The 2012 James Beard finalists were recently announced in Las Vegas. South Florida was shut out from most of the categories, with Hedy Goldsmith of Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink the only south Florida chef (or restaurant) making it this far in this year’s awards process.
Chef Goldsmith was named as one of the six nominees for Outstanding Pastry Chef. She will be pitted against some heavy hitters in the pastry category including Joanne Chang (Flour Bakery + Café
Cambridge, MA),
Melissa Chou
(Aziza
San Francisco),
Dahlia Narvaez
(Osteria Mozza
Los Angeles),
Ghaya Oliveira
(Boulud Sud
NYC), and Mindy Segal
(Mindy’s Hot Chocolate
Chicago). For the complete list of 2012 James Beard finalists in all categories, click here.
Several Miami area chefs and restaurants were shortlisted when the 2012 semifinalists were announced, including Jeff IcInnis (Yardbird Southern Table & Bar), Paula DaSilva (1500 Degrees at Eden Roc), Sergio Navarro (Pubbelly), and Jarrod Verbiak (db Bistro Moderne at the JW Marriott Marquis), but were eliminated during this last cut.
So,
for now, all of Miami’s hopes and dreams of winning a 2012 James Beard
are on the capable shoulders of Hedy Goldsmith for whom winning a Beard
award would be a sweet victory, indeed.
