The reign of peace, love, and ice cream began more than three decades ago in a converted gas station in Burlington, Vermont, where two childhood friends took a risk and opened an ice-cream shop.

A year later, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield were so surprised and delighted that their endeavor was still open they decided to give away ice cream as a thank-you to their customers. Thus, Ben & Jerry’s free ice-cream day was born in 1978 and has been celebrated annually ever since.

Stop into any Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop today from noon until 8 p.m. and you’ll receive a free cone in your choice of flavor. It’s that simple.

Although the limited-release Ron Burgundy Scotchy, Scotch, Scotch is no longer available, if you’re into celebrity-inspired frozen treats, there’s still Liz Lemon Greek fro-yo (named after the slightly neurotic character on 30 Rock) and Phish Food, a tribute to the band and fellow Vermonters.
