Sunday, as a mass of people
moved along the stretch of Eighth Street between 12th
and 27th avenues, street vendors hawked arroz con pollo,
arepas, and chorizo at the annual Calle Ocho Festival.

Arepas, arepas, arepas! There was much
of the same food to be had. With such a homogeneous offering, it was
curious that some vendors felt it necessary to prepare
food-to-order, keeping guests waiting excessively, yet others had
pregrilled mounds of food for the few who patronized them.
Some
vendors stood out, such as Rancho Mateo, with an eye-catching smoking
contraption at each of its locations. Bangkok City set up shop
underneath a tent, offering pedestrians something other than chimichurri sandwiches.
There was a Peruvian food truck that
didn’t have a single customer. Tango Grill food truck made an
appearance, along with a slew of seedy ice-cream trucks. The least sketchy was Mister Softee’s, which offered creamy soft-serve ice-cream cones
for $3 each.
