There’s something fantastic about the idea of cutting out the middle man to get farm fresh produce at your fingertips. Short Order spoke with Farm Fresh Miami Owner Erika Rullman about how joining produce buying clubs saves us money in the long run, and gets you the freshest veggies you’ve ever tasted.
Miami New Times: Tell me a bit about the ideology behind Farm Fresh Miami and what it represents?
Erika Rullman: Farm Fresh Miami is designed to connect farm fresh produce
directly to its consumers. We want to skip the 1500 miles in between you
and your produce and explore what kinds of lovely fruits/veggies are
being grown nearby, from local farmers who focus on sustainable growing
techniques. The newest aspect of Farm Fresh Miami that is closest to my
heart has to do with bringing Farm Fresh Miami directly to our children
and their families through local schools by hosting programs with really
great educational and fund-raising components.
What are the advantages, disadvantages and costs to joining a produce buying club?
The
advantages are getting fresh food fast, eating nutritionally rich
food, sustaining you local food economy, trying new things and so much
more. The only disadvantages would be not getting to choose exactly what
goes in your bag each week, or not getting what you want since it’s not
in season.Our bags cost $33 for a half share (approximately 15 lbs.) or
$50 for a full share (approximately 25lbs.). This equals to around $2/lb.,
which for organic produce is very reasonable. If you truly eat what is
in your bag, you will save lots of money, possibly even when compared
with conventional produce.
Where can members of your buying club pick up their produce?
We
have locations in Aventura, Belle Meade, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove,
Miami Shores, Morningside, Midbeach, The Roads/Downtown, and South
Beach. We just opened new locations at UM Coral Gables Campus, FIU South
Campus, Brickell, The Botanical Garden on South Beach, and Temple Beth
Sholom on 41st Street opening in November.We are passionate about
getting involved in schools and planning programming events to coincide
with our school clubs.
What upcoming events will Farm Fresh Miami be a part of?
We
are part of the new green markets at FIU and UM and the upcoming
October 24th National Food Day and October 26th Sustainability Day.
