I know someone who humps the air whenever he eats something he thinks is utterly delicious. Sure, it’s kind of crass but when you’re talking about a food stand called Doggi Style — which also proudly boasts a logo of hound hitting a hot dog cart from behind — I’d think an act like that is pretty complimentary.

So, I should’ve brought him (and my camera for that precise moment of hilarious taste bud bliss) last Saturday when I decided to hit up this clean, little stand nuzzled in the parking lot of the Westar Gas Station on the corner of Coral Way and Red Road. Because the Venezuelan style street food that the owner, Laura Schloeter was delving out was good enough to make you bark.
On the menu are hot dogs ($2.50 a pop), vegetarian hot dogs ($3.50) and choripanes served on crusty French bread all done up with grilled onions, lettuce, and potato sticks. But what sold me was the burger ($5.50) which consisted of a Latin spiced beef patty (or chicken breast) topped with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, corn, and potato sticks. I also decided to get mine loaded (an additional $2) which comes with a fried egg, bacon, and avocado.
Bow-Wow…
It left me panting and begging for more, especially when you can jazz up your meal even more with Laura’s homemade sauces like garlic, spicy mayo, and my personal favorite, pineapple. Best part? No post grease-seeping-out-of-you- pores feeling.
Doggi Style is open Monday through Saturday, 4 to 11 p.m. And be forewarned, although it appears to be, this is not fast food. Everything is made to order, so, be prepared for a bit of a wait. But it’s worth it.
