Rejoice, South Beach. David’s Café is coming back.
In April, the decades-old Cuban institution on Collins Avenue was shuttered because the surrounding construction hurt business, owners said. The closing followed the 2012 darkening of the Lincoln Road location (due to exorbitant rent), a caffeine-and-grease-laced hideaway for locals and tourists alike.

But in recent days, the café’s unmistakable logo popped up in the windows of a space that once housed Avila-Tei, a kosher Japanese restaurant on the corner of Ninth Street and construction-cramped Alton Road.

Owner Adrian Gonzalez couldn’t be reached over the weekend; however, the emergence is welcome news for South Beach and especially for the residential west side of the island. It’ll join a growing number of neighborhood spots like Michael Pirolo’s Macchialina Taverna Rustica, as well as another outpost of the downtown sandwich spot the Daily, slated to open sometime next year.

Would-be waiters, watch out, though. In 2012, a group of workers protested the original Collins location over an alleged $80,000 in back wages.
David’s Café will be located at 919 Alton Rd. in Miami Beach.
