Six Florida Breweries Owned by Other Beer Companies

As the craft beer industry continues to grow, larger beer companies are taking notice and are acquiring smaller breweries. Florida isn’t immune to this phenomenon. Several international conglomerates have already snatched up breweries in the Sunshine State. Since the purchase of North Carolina’s Wicked Weed Brewing Company by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB-InBev), rumors have beens swirling on social media that Oakland Park’s Funky Buddha Brewery was next.

The Tank Brewing Co. Opens Taproom

The Tank Brewing Company taproom opened this week, making the craft brewery the latest in Miami to pour beers onsite for the public. The announcement was made on the brewery’s social media, which invited the public to an informal “sip and discuss” event and preview to mark the occasion. Owner Carlos Padron says he opened the taproom following a week of inviting test crowds of various sizes.

Wynwood’s Sprung! Beer Festival Features More Than 300 Brewers

The Sprung! Spring Beer Festival April 1 doesn’t highlight just the local craft brewing industry. It’s also an event meant to bring people together, says Tony Albelo. It’s why the event organizer decided to move the springtime festival from Peacock Park in Coconut Grove to the old RC Cola Plant in Wynwood last year. Relocating the fest to the home of so many Miami breweries, bars, and restaurants just made sense.

Depending upon your political views, drinking tequila this Inauguration Day could be a sign of celebration or an escape from reality. Or it could be that you’re drinking tequila at La Cueva, a new Mexican cave-themed bar located at 1111 SW First Ave. in the heart of Brickell. Meaning “the cave” in Spanish, La Cueva is a bar that specializes in all things tequila, mezcal, and the myriad cocktails containing those two spirits.

This month, JWB will begin distributing its beers to more than 20 select bars and restaurants in the Orlando and Tampa areas. It’s also the first time the brewery has distributed in Florida outside its initial market. The distributor is Ohio-based Cavalier Distributing, which also has a facility in Lakeland, Florida.

Five New Miami Breweries to Watch at Fifth-Annual Miami Beer Fest

Many of the breweries showcased at the fifth-annual Miami Beer Festival (MBF) January 14 at Marlins Park will include local favorites, as well others that are soon to open in the Magic City. More than five dozen breweries, many local, will pour at this year’s MBF. Though there’s nothing wrong with sticking to the beers you know, festivals such as these give new breweries a chance to gauge recipes or gain public exposure before opening production facilities.

Miami-Dade County Eases Location Restrictions for Breweries, Wineries, and Distilleries

Opening a brewery, winery, or distillery in unincorporated Miami-Dade County just became a little easier. This past December 6, the Board of County Commissioners reduced the minimum amount of space required to have such places next to schools to 1,000 feet (provided they’re not used for agricultural use). The decision was unanimous. Before, the law required a minimum distance of 2,500 feet — roughly a half-mile — from schools and churches and 1,500 from any other establishment that sells alcohol.
