Works of art aren’t just pretty feats of the human imagination. Art is a great way to draw awareness to environmental issues. The artistic side of environmental activism is expressed this weekend at the Deering Estate Festival of the Arts. The event takes place this Friday through Sunday and is funded by the National Endowment of the Arts. Centered on the theme “In Deep,” the fest will immerse attendees in a world of eco-friendly art and performance. Works created with alternative materials such as plastics, found objects, dirt, and other reusable materials will highlight creativity and upcycling. A photography competition and an eco scavenger hunt will bring out the competitive spirit, while the Mangrove Boardwalk Nighttime Adventure Tour will reveal more of nature’s beauty. Performing arts pieces, such as poetry, interactive activities, and the National Water Dance — a huge production with 91 participating national organizations, universities, and dance schools — will also illustrate the need for celebrating and helping our planet. Head to the Deering Estate at Cutler (16701 SW 72nd Ave., Palmetto Bay). Events happening Friday evening and Saturday after 3:30 p.m. are free. Fest events begin at varying times throughout the weekend. Call 305-235-1668, ext. 233, or visit deeringestate.org.
