Teenagers with foam swords, Cowboy Bebop Spike haircuts, Wolfwood Punishers, Naruto wristbands, and Sailor Jupiter costumes. If this list makes no sense, we probably won’t see you at Florida’s largest anime convention, Yasumicon 2009, this Saturday and Sunday at Florida International University’s Ernest R. Graham Center and Greene Library.

Speaking of anime, if all wars were fought in Super Smash Bros. tournaments, what character would Japan choose? Jigglypuff. Japan would fight World War III with Jigglypuff. Tiger! Tiger uppercut!

Expect hordes of vendors such as the legendary Tate’s Comics, appearances by the NYC chiptune band Arm Cannon, and a sneak peek of Cartoon Network’s new show, Hero: 108. The convention is, as usual, totally free and runs from noon to midnight this Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Sat., July 11, noon; Sun., July 12, noon, 2009

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $18,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
