Can you anticipate what your partner will say in reaction to almost any earthly occurrence? Is sex — if it happens at all — akin to a choreographed and laborious meeting of the genitals? Have you spent every Friday evening in the same corner booth at a local P.F. Chang’s dipping crab wontons in a shared pool of spicy plum sauce? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then you’ve probably thought: “If I could have just one night off for some dirty stranger-sex… ” In the film The Freebie, young married couple Darren (Dax Shepard) and Annie (Katie Aselton) stupidly discuss this thought out loud. Then, they fly completely off the stupid charts by making the fantasy a reality. The couple makes a pact not to discuss their escapades, leaving questions unanswered about just how far each went. The pair naively estimates themselves too evolved to be trapped by human jealousies, but the guessing game that follows brings torment to their once placid, if not platonic, relationship. The indie flick opens at Coral Gables Art Cinema on Friday.
