Michael Moore is polarizing enough that as soon as his name is mentioned between “An Evening With” and “at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival,” you probably already know whether you’ll go. You might think conservatives unfairly jeer him: Fox News once famously announced to protesters in Manhattan via its outdoor news crawl that the Michael Moore Fan Club meets Thursday at a phone booth at Sixth Avenue and 50th Street. But if you’re pissing off Fox — and can claim four of the top-ten-grossing documentaries in American history, as well as a fifth, Roger & Me, that’s a bona fide classic — you’re doing something right. For all of Moore’s tin-eared browbeating (don’t you wish he’d try to convert just one measly Republican?), he’s surely the most successful raconteur working in cinema today — even if, as a major source of red meat for the political left, he’s occasionally full of bull.
