Alonzo Mourning is having an incredible year, and it isn’t over yet. He overcame health problems and brought tenacious D to every game this season. Finally, after fourteen years as a professional baller, Zo is part of a championship-winning team.

“Oh, man, it was a great feeling. I’m just happy for the city of Miami. This is truly a summer to celebrate,” the heavy-voiced center declares. Zo has more to celebrate than just being a key member of the white-hot Heat. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Zo’s Summer Groove. In that decade, Alonzo Mourning Charities have raised five million dollars for at-risk youth in inner-city neighborhoods. Despite this tremendous accomplishment, Zo remains disarmingly modest. “I just try to do the best I can, and to make some good things happen for other people. That’s what it’s all about,” he mutters. In order to continue doing that, the gentle giant will get his groove on.

This year’s events include a golf classic (which costs $750 a person), an incredibly affordable Gloria Estefan concert, and best of all, today’s free block party, followed by an all-star basketball game. “We have something for everybody to enjoy. I want everybody in the community to come out, have fun, and help these charities. It’s a family type of atmosphere at the block party. We have food, prizes, giveaways, live entertainment, radio stations doing live broadcasts ... there’s a lot going on,” says Zo. The party will take place from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m., and the game begins at 6:30 p.m. Both events will take place at the American Airlines Arena, which no doubt will bring to Zo’s mind happy memories of the Miami Heat victory parade. Tickets for the game range from $12 to $60. Call 305-476-0095, or visit www.zsg.com.
