Flights to the Northern Lights: Icelandair Launches Direct Miami Route

Last fall, some lucky Floridians got a glimpse of the Northern Lights during a severe geomagnetic storm. It was a rare spectacle to behold this far south of the Arctic. Soon Floridians will have another chance to experience the wonder of the aurora borealis, when Icelandair launches direct flights from Reykjavík to Miami. Icelandair will now be the only airline offering a direct route to Iceland from Miami and the first to do so since the collapse of WOW Air.

The seven-and-a-half-hour lights launch October 25, operating Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays through March. Peak aurora season typically runs from September to April. Each flight will accommodate 187 passengers, including 22 in Saga Premium seating.
In a statement, the airline announced the new route is also beneficial to Icelanders in search of a sunny vacation: "Florida is a popular winter destination for Icelanders, and Icelandair has for decades offered direct flights to Orlando. Miami is now added as a second gateway and the airlines' 19th destination in North America."

In a statement, Miami International Airport announced the new flights will have an introductory fare of $549 for the travel period from October 26, 2025, through March 29, 2026. The airport also encouraged connecting travelers to take advantage of the Icelandair Stopover program, which lets travelers stay in the country for up to a week at no extra cost.

The airline also noted, "Icelandair's new service will make MIA the only airport in Florida with nonstop flights to all five sovereign countries in Scandinavia and will make Reykjavik MIA's 21st European destination."
