Sometimes music needs to speak to you on an emotional and intellectual level so you can work out all the stress and angst you’ve built up throughout your day. Sometimes, though, you just want to zouk. And party you will when French-Caribbean band Kassav’ celebrates 30 years of making zouk music by performing at the Fillmore Miami Beach this Saturday night.
A fusion of Haitian kompa, Dominican merengue, Puerto Rican salsa, Trinidadian calypso, and West African makossa, and anchored by funky bass, rock guitar, big-band brass, and countryside percussion, zouk is meant to move you. The Fillmore has made room for an open dance floor in front of the stage. Who wants to sit in a stuffy chair when they can zouk?
