Stories of adolescents discovering their sexuality are nothing new to stage or film. In fact, in 1892, German playwright Frank Wedekind wrote about that very topic, and his play was subsequently banned from Germany back in the day because of its honest take on homosexuality, abortion, and rape, and also because people back in the day were super-uptight. People are still uptight today, which is why a show such as Spring Awakening, a rock musical based on Wedekind’s original work, is so resonant.
Area Stage Company (1560 S. Dixie Hwy., Coral Gables), which is among the best theater conservatories in the nation, will perform this Tony- and Drama Desk Award-winning musical through June 3. Set in late-19th-century Germany, Spring Awakening abounds with alternative rock numbers and tells powerful stories that delve into profound subject matter such as sexuality, rape, and child abuse — all told through the eyes of young men and women joined in an odyssey of love, escape, and self-discovery.

Wed., May 30; June 1-3, 8 p.m., 2012
