In 2011, James “Woody” Beckham suffered a spinal cord injury while making a tackle during a rugby match between his Florida Atlantic University’s Men’s Rugby Club and the University of Miami’s RFC. Woody has come a long way through surgery and rehabilitation and continues to pursue academic interests while working with his family for his namesake foundation, which raises funds for the recovery of people with spinal cord injuries.

The Woody Foundation has four major annual fundraisers, with Woodystock being its big musical overture.

This year’s benefit concert, its second, is slated to get Coconut Grove’s Peacock Park (2820 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove) swinging to the beats of varied drums with a diverse roster of performers. The Boom Booms, an indie soul band from Vancouver; Magical Beat from Colombia; Chicago-based violinist Katarina Visnevska; the Magic City hippies of the Robby Hunter Band; and DJ Brett Beats Bailey will set up the headliners and beloved South Florida reggae legends of the Fourth Dimension.

Along with the music will be art, food, and a silent auction, as well as drinks from Fritz & Franz Bierhaus. Admission is free, but it wouldn’t be a fundraiser if a $10 donation weren’t encouraged. The fun runs from 4 till 8 p.m. Saturday. Visit woodyfoundation.org.

Sat., Sept. 27, 4 p.m., 2014
