On the first Labor Day Weekend we can remember sans Jerry Lewis’s fat face simulcast across network television, the other Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy, was blowing up the Internet rumor mill.

No, the 50-year actor didn’t give some street walking tranny a ride home, nor did he impregnate another Spice Girl. The latest rumor surrounding Murphy is actually incredibly TV-PG. According to “insiders,” Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26.

Although no deal has been finalized, Deadline Hollywood reports that next year’s Oscar producer-slash-Miami native Brett Ratner will meet with Academy President Tom Sherak today and drop Murphy’s name as the perfect host.

“Nobody knows movies better or is a bigger cinephile than Eddie,” one inside source tells Deadline. “Not Brett [Ratner]. Not even Quentin Tarantino. Eddie can quote scenes from every single movie word for word. “He can bring all that experience to hosting. Plus he has Saturday Night Live experience before a live crowd.”

Alright, so Deadline’s unidentified insider’s reasoning as to why Murphy will host the Oscars isn’t too strong, but we’re buying it anyways. Eddie Murphy should host the Oscars, and he should do so in character, SNL characters.

For starters, Murphy can open the show with one of those obnoxious Oscar medleys as Buckwheat, complete with afro puff, hobo threads, and suspenders.

He should deliver the opening monologue as Stevie Wonder, maybe play on the fact he hasn’t seen any of the nominated films because he’s blind.

After the commercial break, Murphy show’s up wearing a yellow sweater, and delivers a few lines as Mr. Robinson.

Finally, after the final awards been handed out, Murphy can revive his Michael Jackson impersonation and end the show with a public service announcement, a reminder everyone that “nice boys don’t get girls pregnant.”

Now that’s how you host the Oscars, James Franco.
