While Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo fixates on the new Netflix film The Rip, others in South Florida are anxiously awaiting another new release. The Moment, starring Charli XCX, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last week and is showing in New York and Los Angeles this weekend. It opens nationwide next week, including in Miami.
The mockumentary, starring the Brat popstar as a fictionalized version of herself, is photographer and filmmaker Aidan Zamiri’s directorial debut and features cameos from Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, and Alexander Skarsgård, among others. Earlier this week, Variety reported that the film had become A24‘s fastest-selling limited release. One sign that excitement is building locally? Wynwood Pride is hosting a free party at Foxhole celebrating the movie’s release, featuring performances by local drag queens FKA Twink, Sting Dion, and Kat Wilderness.
The film’s synopsis describes it as the story of “A rising pop star [navigating] the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut.” During her press tour, the film’s lead has stated that the film depicts an alternate reality of sorts in which she succumbs to commercial pressures in the wake of Brat‘s success and loses control of her art.
“It’s a revisionist history of Brat,” Charli XCX says in press materials for the film. “It’s about this moment where art and capitalism meet — which sometimes is inevitable, especially when you’re dealing with pop music — and this feeling of, as an artist, being pulled in these different directions. You want to remain true to yourself, but are also aware that you are completely changed because of the success that you’ve experienced.”
