Pin-up girls are commonly valued for their aesthetics — their curvy figures associated with everything from tattoos to rockabilly album covers and floozy Halloween getups. But what about the realities of the pin-up girl?
In his series “Deconstructing Pin-Ups,” Ahmed Gomez hopes to bring a new perspective to those near-nude frontierwomen who broke down barriers during the conservative 1920s through ’50s. Gomez’s mission, he says, is to “trigger new reference points and stimulate critical commentary on the painting as either an element of value or a visual interpretation of cultural representation.” In other words, much like the red lipstick that pinups used to wear, it’s bold.
To see for yourself, head over to the Museo Vault this Saturday for the opening reception between 6 and 10 p.m. But if your art lust still isn’t satisfied, the girls will hang around until the exhibition’s close on October 1.
