They say more than a million people attend the Calle Ocho festival each year. But who’s verifying those numbers? Not the partiers waving the flags of their home country. Not the vendors hawking arepas, coconuts, and pig products. And certainly not anyone spending the day as it was meant to be spent: getting wasted with droves of your Hispanic brothers-from-another-mother to a daylong playlist provided by dozens of bands and DJs.
You’ll just have to trust the stats. Of course the Calle Ocho festival is colossal. Of course it attracts a huge number of revelers. And until you’ve found yourself in the middle of its roughly million celebrants, you cannot possibly understand its scale.
Luckily, you can experience it yourself this Sunday, when the festival takes over 24 blocks of Little Havana’s most famous thoroughfare, SW Eighth Street (AKA Calle Ocho).
