, the Tampa-based pioneers of satanic death metal, have caused some serious controversy since the band’s formation in 1987. The band’s music, lyrics, and onstage antics have supposedly caused fans to murder priests, sacrifice animals, blow up clubs, and commit suicide (as alleged in the BBC’s 2005 documentary Death Metal Murders). With an upside-down cross branded into his forehead, lead vocalist Glen Benton is not joking when he roars, “I am one with Satan.” He has been called the G.G. Allin of metal, and has threatened to commit suicide, doused audiences with animal organs, and even shot a squirrel with a gun during a magazine interview.
Deicide’s current lineup features the intense guitar duo of Jack Owen (formerly of Cannibal Corpse) and Ralph Santillo (of Iced Earth). Fearless fans can experience these masters of brutality at the end of an all-day metal concert at Flavour, 2895 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove. Other local acts will include Aghora, At Odds with God, and Seducing Murder.
