A sad, dormant woman who just lies around, waiting to be brought to life by a knight in shining armor? That never really flowed with our feminist tendencies. So it’s refreshing to see somebody questioning Sleeping Beauty and radical passivity. In a dreamlike re-imagining of the classic fairytale, director Julia Leigh’s modern Sleeping Beauty is Lucy (Emily Browning), an impoverished college student who answers an ad seeking a “lingerie waitress” and finds herself in a strange mansion filled with beautiful women and elderly men instead. Desperate for cash and sporting an I-don’t-care-about-anything attitude, she agrees to a gig that involves taking sleep-inducing drugs so men can fulfill erotic fantasies with her body. But eventually the questionable job wears on her; Lucy decides to break her own spell by finding out what happens to her while she sleeps.
