Yeah, you probably have your own ideas about what a NASCAR race is: 40 cars making left turns for three hours. Right? Not quite. Well, there can be as many as 43 cars on the track, and the Ford 400 is no ordinary race. The stakes are much higher this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, which annually hosts the final race in the journey to the coveted Sprint Cup. That’s right — there’s no postseason in NASCAR, so the drivers will give it all they’ve got, ride-or-die style, for a chance at racing immortality.
Who will take home the cup? Perennial frontrunner Jimmy Johnson? Top dog Denny Hamlin? Fan favorite Carl Edwards? It’s too early to tell. All we know is that rival speedway owner Burton Smith needs to be put in his place for suggesting that South Florida — or as he put it, “North Cuba” — is an unworthy and inappropriate location for the ultimate NASCAR pit stop. After all, any speedway that lets you bring your own cooler full of drinks is OK in our book.
