Film festivals are great because the roving bands of 13-year-old girls who attend every single movie in Miami — laughing wildly at the most poignant moments — aren’t there. Instead the filmmakers submit themselves to awkward questions from the audience. And in the case of the Miami Jewish Film Festival, you get to nosh and kibbutz with your friends before the show. Today, to commemorate United Nations Holocaust Memorial Day (which is actually the 27th, but let’s not get technical), the festival will screen As Seen Through These Eyes at 1:30 p.m. at Sunrise Cinemas Intracoastal.

This paradoxically uplifting Holocaust documentary is narrated by the most soothing and affirming voice in the English language, that of Maya Angelou. It tells the story of artists who continued to create and express themselves in concentration camps. MJFF films, which include comedies, dramas, and more documentaries, are screening at sites countywide January 19 through 27.
