No, the pile of colorful clothes is not a highly stylized garage sale. It’s visual artist Shinique Smith’s exuberant manifestation of praise music, poetry, and urban life. The Baltimore-born artist’s latest solo exhibition, “Menagerie,” features her unique designs, which blend the flamboyant lines of street graffiti (using Japanese calligraphy ink instead of spray paint) with bundled clothing, household items, and found objects. Her creations take on a potent meaning beyond the urban landscape. They become a colorful, controlled expression of how everyday objects and imagery factor into our modern lives.
