For a surefire sign that Art Basel is set to invade the 305, all you have to do is visit the Frost Art Museum (10975 SW 17th St., Miami), which has unloaded the first epic exhibits of the season instead of saving the big guns for December.
The Frost has marched out three Cuba-centric exhibits offering historical and contemporary perspectives on the art and artists from the island, including a major installation by Humberto Castro, a historic selection of works from the collection of Miami real estate developer Jorge M. Pérez (the namesake of downtown’s new Pérez Art Museum Miami), and a modest group show examining the enduring impact of African religion on Cuba and the Caribbean.
In his solo, “Tracing Antilles,” the Havana-born, Miami-based Castro executes an artistic journey across the Antilles with an evocative display that conceptually circumnavigates the Caribbean islands to investigate the forces that have shaped the region’s cultures through colonization and immigration. The show runs through February 2, 2014.
