The first time you heard John Legend’s voice, it was simply in the background acting as the icing on the already-entertaining cakes of artists such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Dilated Peoples. But in late 2004, when he dropped “Used to Love U,” Legend slid into his own groove — soulful R&B engineered to make you move, fall in love, and, um, do grown-up things. Since his debut, he’s won six Grammys, performed for the president, and become a musical force so versatile he’s done duets with everyone from Tony Bennett to Miri Ben-Ari to Rick Ross.
This Thursday night at 7:30 at the Hard Rock Live, Legend will run through the material that has made him one of the new school’s most soulful guys. He’ll remind you why artful passion needs no strobe lights or sequined costumes — just a microphone and an amazing voice.
