Charming and humorous Superior Donuts, which opens this Saturday at GableStage at the Biltmore, tells the story of Arthur, a former ’60s radical who operates a rundown doughnut shop in uptown Chicago; and Franco, his young African-American employee. Arthur finds himself reminiscing about his youth and the city he grew up in, while Franco, who has a few secrets of his own, wants nothing more than to update the dilapidated doughnut shop to make it more modern. Filled with laughs and poignant moments, Superior Donuts explores the challenges of facing the past while embracing diversity. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County), it’s a lighthearted romp exploring familiar themes while finding the humor in the eclectic nature of generational gaps and uneasy differences.
Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: March 12. Continues through April 10, 2011
