Remember Umbrella Sky, the colorful installation of dozens of umbrellas that took over every Instagram feed in South Florida earlier this year?
It’s back. And this time, it’s sparkly.
Meet Sunlit Sky, Portugal-based creative group Sextafeira’s followup to its summertime social media smash, will debut tomorrow evening at a grand-opening event with live music and remarks by Coral Gables officials.

No umbrellas were involved in the making of this spectacle, though. Instead, Sunlit Sky incorporates 27,500 gold and silver strips, suspended above Giralda Plaza using 11,900 square feet of metallic mesh. The result looks like a river of grass, if that grass were made of Christmas-tree tinsel.
Sunlit Sky will open to the public Friday, December 14, at 4 p.m. and will hang there for all your selfie needs through March 10, 2019. After the unveiling, attendees can groove to live music by the Jackie Mendez Band while taking their first look.

The first photos of the installation certainly look pretty. It might be more difficult for the average smartphone user to capture, though. But still, you can imagine the sparkly effect those strips will make en masse on a sunny, breezy day. So congrats to Coral Gables for creating another spectacle to draw visitors (and their dollars) to the City Beautiful.
And RIP to your Instagram feed.
