$10,000

Call us socialists and drinkers of the proverbial Kool-Aid, but we don’t mind paying taxes for the services of firefighters and police officers. We’ve never been trapped in a blazing high-rise or involved in a hostage situation, but it’s good to know that if we do, we won’t have to worry whether our checking account is in the red when we need a hand. And this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Hard Rock Live, we’ll celebrate our local saviors in blue and the ones who fight the hot orange and red as they pummel each other at the Hollywood Police Athletic League’s Heroes in Action. During this evening of boxing, everyone’s a good guy, so there’s no need to choose sides. The best male and female fighters from Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach police and fire-rescue squads will go head-to-head in 12 high-powered bouts that will give new meaning to the phrase “Protect and serve.” Tickets start at $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and younger.

Fri., Sept. 11, 7 p.m., 2009
