For the third year running, Miami is preparing for an influx of both Ohio musicians and the occasional funky hairstyle. Given that the regular music scene in Miami consists of a puzzling mixture of house music and sad-sack street musicians drumming on trashcans, the Cleveland Orchestra is welcome to fill the salty air with Wagner. Graced by the presence of world-class soprano Measha Brueggergosman and her beautifully styled Afro, the Cleveland orchestra is — dare we say it — damn hip.
Make sure to see Brueggergosman and the orchestra in their full glory this Friday, weaving the heart-pounding rhythms of Wagner’s Wesndonck Songs and Hostakovich’s Symphony No. 7. Throughout the weeklong residency, music nerds can also take in special lectures such as “Music and the Brain.” Perhaps director Franz Welser-Möst and Dr. Ali Rezai can explain why Dion’s “Runaround Sue” lingered in your head an entire summer. As to why Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7 reminds you of Aunt Gladys’s unshaved legs, you’re probably on your own.
