Ari Gold is one of the premier gay pop stars of the new millennium. He’s Jewish, he’s handsome, and his R&B dance record, “Transport Systems,” is climbing the charts. Somewhere in the universe, aliens are jiving and snapping their fingers (or otherwise evolved digits) to his hit “Where the Music Takes You,” which reached the number one slot on humankind’s radio satellite network, Sirius. On Friday night, Gold will be performing a free concert at Nikki Beach. The event is part of the wider GALA Choruses Festival, a convention of GLBT choirs taking the stage in Miami through this Saturday. With thousands of singers converging on the Arsht Center from around the world, this thing is the Art Basel of homosexuality.

A retinue of celebrities will provide entertainment, including Alec Mapa, a Filipino-American comedian and current host of a transgendered dating show on LOGO. The GALA Choruses goal of “changing the world through song” is no empty ideal. The group was formed in the Eighties, when gays were still on the margins. This year’s event has sponsorship from corporations such as Coors and Aquafina. It has come a long way. For tickets, event times, and other info, visit www.arshtcenter.org, or www.galachoruses.org.
