Art isn’t ruled by truth or beauty or the subconscious mind. It’s governed by a simple precept, which is this: If it makes no money, it’s worthless, and if it makes a lot of money, it’s priceless. So it makes sense that David Castillo Gallery should move from Second Avenue in Wynwood to 420 Lincoln Rd., where big dollars, and the pedestrians who carry them, vastly outnumber those on every other stretch of asphalt in Dade County.

In his inaugural exhibition at his new digs in South Beach, a stable of local, U.S., and international visual creators birth a new “Amerika,” which is the title of the show being presented. And though global economic forces would argue otherwise, the artists find intrinsic value in concept, color, shape, and historical context. So does David Castillo himself, one of the sharpest local minds in the business.

With art degrees from Yale University and the Angelicum in Rome, he’s equally comfortable discussing the brushstrokes on a 100-year-old canvas as the typeface on a $40,000 electronic wire transfer. The show features video work by Best of Miami winner Jillian Mayer, sculptures by Huma Bhabha, performance by Susan Lee Chun, textiles by Nick Cave, neon lights by Rafael Ferrer, and much more. The show is free, opens with a reception this Friday from 6 to 11 p.m., and runs through November 15. Call 305-573-8110 or visit davidcastillogallery.com.

Sept. 26-Nov. 15, 6 p.m., 2014
