The “sex talk” is something no parent looks forward to, and many adolescents never want to ask about it despite their burning curiosity. Nevertheless, modern American society comes closer every day to more open dialogues about sex, creating a safe field for teens to ask questions and get the gory but necessary details. This scenario couldn’t be further from the reality of previous generations, when such inquiries were mostly quashed and discouraged. The musical Spring Awakening demonstrates in heart-breaking detail the devastation caused by that lack of education.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, Spring Awakening is a story of teenage self-discovery and sexuality under the repressive backdrop of late-19th-century Germany. Hailed as “the best new musical in a generation” by the New York Observer, the rock musical swept the 2007 Tony Awards, winning a total of eight, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book. With a haunting score by pop singer Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening is the production that launched Glee stars Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff into stardom.
Directed by Liz Dickinson and with musical direction by Andrew Gilbert, the gripping tale comes to Main Street Playhouse (6766 Main St., Miami Lakes) this Friday and runs through October 12.
