For the first time since its sensational debut in 2004, local audiences will be able to see one of the most heralded recent Broadway hits. The Pillowman premieres tonight, and contrary to its name, the play is far from a snoozer. Written by Martin McDonagh, The Pillowman is set in an unnamed totalitarian state and centers on a writer who is being interrogated about the twisted subjects of his short stories and their apparent relation to a horrific string of child murders. The GableStage production unites some of South Florida’s finest actors, including Antonio Amadeo, Ken Clement, Paul Tei, Gregg Weiner, and Kim St. Leon, and gives them harrowing mulch to till. The dark comedy has been likened to Kafka and the Brothers Grimm, and sensitive patrons are forewarned: Some scenes are decidedly objectionable. Tonight’s performance begins at 8:00 at GableStage at the Biltmore Hotel. The play will run through September 17.
