An evening at the Miami Beach Cinematheque (512 Española Way, Miami Beach) is like a visit to your eccentric aunt, who seems a bit odd to some but is undeniably fun nonetheless. The MBC is located in a modest storefont among the tourist-trap restaurants of Española Way; the “cinema” is literally a room with a hodgepodge of plastic chairs for sittin’, and the films are projected onto a white wall painted. This month’s offering is Chris & Don: A Love Story, an Irish documentary about the relationship between Christopher Isherwood — the creative mind behind the show Cabaret — and his lover Don Bachardy. It just so happens Don was about 30 years younger than ol’ Chris, but never mind such lurid details — this film is a warm, sophisticated, and funny look at the artists’ lives, both professional and personal. And just like a visit to Auntie, with all the eccentricities, you’ll be glad you stopped by for a visit.

Chris & Don is part of the Cinematheque’s Weekend Out series, which promotes GLBT-friendly films. But anything shown at this little place has a touch of gay in it somewhere, so just go and enjoy. Showtimes are 7:50 and 9:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
