Slide into just about any bar in Miami and you can order a plate of delicious tapas to accompany your cerveza. Although the little plates have become wildly popular stateside, this high-end bar food originates from Andalusia, a region in southern Spain renowned for its beaches, agriculture, and unique gourmet delights. This week local gastronomes can experience familiar yet foreign flavors at the first A Taste of Andalucia food festival.
“The food reminds Cubans of what their mothers cooked at home, because there were so many immigrants from the Andalusian region,” explains Julien Debarle, manager of the InterContinental Miami. Today through June 11, his hotel will be filled with the sumptuous culture of southern Spain. “Every day we will focus on the particular cooking of a different area,” explains executive banquet chef Medardo Rodriguez. In addition to food cooked by imported chefs, guests can enjoy art and live flamenco performances. Prices range from $25 for lunch to $50 for à la carte specialties.
