Set on a diving board in a hotel in Greece, High Dive chronicles a woman’s fear of heights and her misadventures during past vacations. Written by award-winning playwright Leslie Ayvazian, High Dive is a light comedy about the indelible task of overcoming one’s greatest fears while finding the absurdity within them. The play explores risk-taking through hilarious anecdotes about courageous excursions gone horribly wrong (a hurricane in Hawaii and a cold snap in Florida, among others).
Five-time Carbonell-nominated actress Barbara Sloan stars as the narrator. She will comically recount her adventures in calamity, aging, and overcoming fear while standing perched above a pool, contemplating whether or not to jump. And although it’s billed as a one-person play, the production will actually star a cast of 34. A half hour before the performance, Sloan will enlist willing audience members to play hotel guests who goad her to take the plunge. High Dive opens at New Theatre on Friday.
