Leave your topsiders at home, Pops — this definitely isn’t your grandfather’s afternoon regatta. The biggest powerboats in the nation are revving it up in Sunny Isles Beach for the second annual Offshore Powerboat Challenge Weekend. From the shores of Florida’s Riviera (sort of), you can watch motorists take it to Bimini and back in the Bimini Memorial Ocean Race (last year, the record was set at 1 hour 44 seconds), or place your bets on the Thunderboat Poker Run.
Things culminate this Sunday with the Offshore Super Series powerboat contest, where racers packing major power will prove that size does matter. The winner will score more than just bragging rights; he or she will be helping a good cause: the charity Take Stock in Children.
The nasty nautical challenge begins at 9 a.m. at Haulover Park. Admission is ten bucks and gets you access for all three days. For individual race times, call 305-792-1706 or visit siboffshore.com.
