As an artist, R&B singer Trey Songz thrives on being perfectly competent. He doesn’t have the outsize personality of R. Kelly, the songwriting chops of Ne-Yo, the consistent crossover potential of T-Pain, or the ability to put an album together like The-Dream. But nonetheless he’s the biggest male star in R&B outside of Chris Brown. Sure, Trey’s singles could be sung by anyone, but alas, they aren’t, so he remains one of the most rewarding artists in the genre, slipping seamlessly between up-tempo club bangers and bedroom ballads. The man’s steady ascent can be linked in part to his emergence as a genuine sex symbol, and it’s this aspect of his persona that most informs him as a performer. A recent amateur video from a show, which circulated among hip-hop blogs, featured two female fans jumping onstage to make out, and another showed Trey brandishing an assortment of women’s underwear collected onstage. Look out for flying panties this Saturday at 9 p.m. when Trey grabs the mike at South Beach club Play.
