When Sarah Jones wrote her one-woman show, Bridge and Tunnel, she made the New York City subway her mobile study hall. There, she analyzed the characters who travel into Manhattan from the diverse immigrant communities of surrounding outer boroughs. They are often nicknamed (both lovingly and disparagingly) the “bridge and tunnel crowd.” Though the script could have easily fallen into parody territory à la Coming to America, Jones’s impersonations (of everyone from a Pakistani accountant to a Chinese mother adjusting to her daughter’s alternative lifestyle) are an adoring tribute. Even Meryl Streep gave her props. Although the play’s Broadway run ended in 2006, performances continue elsewhere, including Women’s Theatre Project at Sixth Star Studios, where Karen Stephens stars in the title role.
Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 28. Continues through Nov. 7, 2010
