The French spliff, or marijuana cigarette, is sprinkled with tobacco, topped with hash, and rolled into a weedy cone. It is smoked while drinking wine or coffee, looking cool, and thinking French artistic thoughts. It is usually followed by a warm croissant; sex with a moody, dark-eyed beauty; and a good movie. Now that’s culture!
Live like the French and celebrate 4/20 at Friday’s screening of Le Couperet (The Ax) at the Tower Theater. The noir thriller, based on an American book by pulp fiction master Donald Westlake, follows an unemployed business clone as he murders all of the job competition and tries to secure employment for himself. The 2005 film was nominated in the best actor and best adaptation categories at the French Oscars (called the Cesar Awards) and features the dark humor, clever plot twists, and witty dialogue for which the genre is famous.
Even better: You can see this cult favorite in Miami’s own classic theater. The Tower opened in 1926 and was once the most impressive cinema house in the South. Even if you don’t float in on a cloud of herb, you might just see a ghost.
