Keep Miami New Times Free
We’re aiming to raise $7,500 by April 26. Your support ensures New Times can continue watching out for you and our community. No paywall. Always accessible. Daily online and weekly in print.
Getting your vision out there or, heck, just securing a wall to hang your canvas on is not always easy. A few locals are not going to bother waiting around to be “discovered” by gallery owners who deem them worthy. Nor are they burning prayer candles, hoping to be judged and juried into a show. This feisty group who call themselves Artists in the Middle are renting their own gallery space (777 NE 79th St., Miami), thankyouverymuch. The AIM are also pocketing the flack dollars and taking a grassroots approach to marketing their bad-ass selves, buying up advertising space in local and national art and design magazines and Websites, while giving back to the community by distributing food to needy families in the Upper Eastside and Little Haiti. The group’s second exhibit, opening tonight at 7:00, features work by AIM founder and former New York City street artist, Rafael Marrero-Aristy, as well as contemporary pieces by Purvis Young and other AIM artists.
