Here’s a video art installation we wish existed: a time-lapse video of Miami’s coastline. From overgrown swamp to year-round playground to hyperdeveloped, overextended residential mecca; it seems there are new buildings sprouting up along our shores faster than zits on a thirteen-year-old’s forehead. No matter how far we move inland, a healthy portion of Miami’s allure remains lapping on the sand. Generations have relied on our delicate shoreline for sustenance, transport, and pleasure. There isn’t a video to show it all, but there is a wonderful new exhibit that puts the continual change into context at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida. “Water Stories” portrays our ever-changing climes through photographs, rare artifacts salvaged from the briny deep, and interactive exhibits for adults and kids alike.
Besides the historical perspective, today’s exhibition opening will offer a variety of children’s activities, guided tours, live music, drinks, and hot dogs by gourmet doggery Frankitude. Order a salmon hot dog to keep the theme going, why don’t you? The show will run through January 20, 2008.
