Reader support matters more than ever

Latin America is rich in the vestiges of grand traditions and vibrant with modern cultural creativity. Unfortunately, indulging in a visit to enjoy such offerings involves only two choices: staying on the bus in tourist-trampled “representations” (like Tourist Town in Belize), or traveling to indigenous outposts where you’ll be tortured and murdered by paramilitary groups. But enough about Miami. This week some of South America’s modern culture, as manifested in Argentina and Uruguay, braves a local visit courtesy of Miami Dade College and associates in the form of the Argentinean Films Showcase and the accompanying Uruguayan Art Exhibition at the Tower Theater.
The former screens 17 features and 23 shorts, many of them making their U.S. debuts. Most feature English-language subtitles, as if we needed them. The fest begins tonight at 8:00 with Mariano Mucci’s El Boquete, which follows a 7:00 cocktail reception. Admission is $12. Call 305-877-8496. Art of many styles from Uruguay will hang at the Tower through August 29. The official opening party takes place August 23 at 7:00 p.m., with music by violinist Federico Britos and guitarist Jorge Garcia. The art exhibit is free. Call 305-643-8706.
