To children, The Wizard of Oz seems simple. A Midwestern girl who speaks like Sarah Palin gets swept away by a tornado made out of a lady’s stocking. She kills a witch, gets homesick, and returns to Kansas with a click of her heels. As you grow older, you realize that Oz is in fact a cautionary tale worth watching again through adult eyes. Women should never trust those who refer to them as “my pretty.” Always, always, pay attention to the man behind the curtain, whether he be a meek hot-air balloonist or Dick Cheney. And finally, flying monkeys must be avoided at all costs. We recommend a night at the ballet for a spectacular retelling of L. Frank Baum’s classic novel, complete with Art Deco sets (how South Beach!), the tunes you grew up singing, and elaborate choreography. Life lessons were never so thrilling.
