More than booze, boobs, and general mayhem, Carnival, the season of festivities leading up to Lent, is defined by two things: music and culture. Imagine Rio de Janeiro’s Sambadrome without samba or the streets of Trinidad without soca. Here in the U.S., however, Mardi Gras has made Carnival synonymous with jazz and bared breasts. And while Bourbon Street isn’t exactly where you’d want to find your daughter, the whole family is welcomed at Miami’s Carnaval on the Mile. For 13 years, it has offered music and dancing without any awkward family run-ins.
This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Miracle Mile will be overrun with art, food, and music. Jazz will still be at the forefront, with Spyro Gyra headlining on Saturday. But local giants such as Ed Calle, Spam Allstars, and Suenalo will add Latin flavor. Stuff your face with food from all over the world while artists showcase fine art. Join in anywhere between Douglas Road and Le Jeune Road.
