Given the area’s vibrant Latin vibe, South Florida is an unlikely location to celebrate soul music, but that’s exactly what Vintage Soul will do this Saturday. Coming together to pay homage to James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin, talented local singers and songwriters will simultaneously look toward both the past and future.

One of the features of the event at the Van Dyke Café will be an open-mike hour that includes spoken word, stand-up comedy, and undiscovered musicians who share a love for this ever-evolving musical style. The hosts for the 9 p.m. show will be R&B singers Natasha Haynes (who also produced the event), Geneiva Allen, and pianist/vocalist Kawan DeBose. If you’d like to be included in the open mike, get in touch beforehand, because entrants are preselected.
Sun., Aug. 16, 9 p.m., 2009

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $18,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
