Orchids seem custom-made for South Florida, what with their tropical flair and colorful resemblance to the female anatomy. But despite common misconception, they’re not “set ’em and forget ’em” flowers. James Deering learned that fact the hard way.
When he set up shop in Miami, the socialite/Grovite/superrich dude created a special orchid garden for some of his favorite blooms. But it turned into an epic fail. He learned a lot from his mistakes, and now Vizcaya (3251 S. Miami Ave., Miami) is home to tons of stunning blossoms. You too can learn from his success — so you don’t kill yet another Home Depot special.
At the informational gathering Orchids: What Went Wrong, Carol De Biase, Vizcaya’s curator of orchids, will school you on what to do and (maybe even more important) what not to do with these brilliant bouquets. Learn to charm the hell out of ’em, and soon everyone will call you the orchid whisperer.
The workshop runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. this Saturday. Tickets cost $25 and are available at the gate. Price includes Vizcaya admission. Call 305-250-9133 or visit vizcaya.org.
