If the iconic 1950s show Lassie were remade today, it would be Timmy who’d be running to tell Lassie that Aunt May fell into an irrigation ditch, but Lassie’s second personal assistant, Jeff, would stop him at the screen door. “I could maybe pencil you in for a week from Tuesday,” Jeff would say. “But just a phoner, because she has a makeup sesh and some charity thing afterward.”
Like the rest of the pooches, Lassie would be heading to Rescues Rock the Runway, Miami’s first fashion show for dogs. Don’t roll your eyes. Pet fashion is big business these days, and Lassie is not going to get out of this recession by sitting around licking her butt. She’s already got the Mafair’s rooftop club Cabana One to host, the TORU dog fashion label to provide the threads, Vic Mendez to DJ, and a lineup of the hottest bitches in Dade County. Drinks will be served to those over 21 (that’s 3 in dog years), and the proceeds will go to Paws 4 You Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to finding rescued dogs good homes.
See? Lassie’s still got your back, Timmy. Now go fetch her some steak tartare, you no-good malingerer.
